Bags to cubic yards calculator
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so the conversion is just 27 ÷ bag size. For the common 2 cu ft bag, that is 13.5 bags per yard.
Enter your measurements
- Bags per cubic yard
- 13.5
1 cu yd × 27 = 27 cu ft
27 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft per bag = 13.5 → 14 bags
- Bag counts are rounded up to whole bags. Bagged material is compressed and bulk material settles, so the two don’t always match to the shovelful.
Quick answers for common sizes

Bags per cubic yard, by bag size
| Bag size | Bags | Bags per cubic yard |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 cu ft | 54 bags | 54 |
| 0.75 cu ft | 36 bags | 36 |
| 1 cu ft | 27 bags | 27 |
| 1.5 cu ft | 18 bags | 18 |
| 2 cu ft | 14 bags | 13.5 |
| 3 cu ft | 9 bags | 9 |
The conversion
Bulk yards sell by the cubic yard; garden centers sell bags by the cubic foot (or litres). Converting between them is one division.
bags per cubic yard = 27 ÷ bag size (cu ft) cubic yards = bags × bag size (cu ft) ÷ 27 bags per m³ = 1,000 ÷ bag size (L)
| Bag size | Bags per cubic yard | Typical contents |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 cu ft | 54 | Pea gravel, sand, decorative stone |
| 0.75 cu ft | 36 | Topsoil, some compost |
| 1 cu ft | 27 | Compost, potting mix |
| 1.5 cu ft | 18 | Raised-bed mix, some mulch |
| 2 cu ft | 13.5 | Most bagged mulch |
| 3 cu ft | 9 | Large mulch bags |
The most common version of the question, for mulch, is worked through in How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard, including what a yard of bags covers. For soil in bags, see How much soil for a 4×8 raised bed, which is almost exactly a yard per bed.
Where people go wrong
- Bags by weight. Stone, sand and some soils are labelled in pounds or kilograms. You need the volume (often printed smaller on the bag) to convert to yards.
- Litres vs quarts. Potting mix is often sold in dry quarts; 25.7 dry quarts is 1 cubic foot.
- Compressed bales. Peat and coir bales expand to much more than their bag volume when loosened — the label usually lists the expanded volume.
Carrying it home
Volume and weight are different problems. Ten bags of mulch are light; ten bags of sand or gravel are about 500 lb, which is a real load for a car. A 2 cu ft bag of wet mulch can weigh more than you expect, too. Check your vehicle’s payload before loading up, and for anything over a yard or so of stone, soil or sand, compare the price of delivery with several trips.

- Wheelbarrow (6 cu ft class)Mid-range price
Most home wheelbarrows hold 4–6 cubic feet — so a cubic yard of mulch is five or six trips. Two wheels are steadier on soft ground.
