How much seed to overseed 5,000 sq ft?
Overseeding 5,000 square feet of tall fescue takes about 20 pounds of seed at 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft (a 3–5 pound range), or 3 bags of 7 lb.
How to work it out
- 5,000 sq ft ÷ 1,000 × 4 lb = 20 lb
- 20 lb ÷ 7 lb per bag = 3 bags
Overseeding thickens an existing lawn, so it uses less seed than a new one. The seed only helps if it reaches soil: mow short, rake out thatch or core-aerate first, and keep the surface moist for the first couple of weeks.

- Seed needed
- 20 lb (9.07 kg)
- Seeding rate used
- 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- Starter fertilizer
- 20 lb of a 24-25-4 starter (≈1 lb phosphate per 1,000 sq ft)
- Cool-season grasses usually establish best from late-summer / early-fall seeding, with spring as a second choice.
- No weed-and-feed or crabgrass preventer around seeding. Most of them stop grass seed from sprouting too. Rutgers and UNH Extension: use only a weed product whose label says it is safe for newly seeded lawns, and read it before you buy.
- More seed isn’t better — overcrowded seedlings compete and thin out. Good seed-to-soil contact and steady moisture matter more.

What to know about overseeding 5,000 sq ft
Twenty pounds is three 7 lb bags with a pound spare, or one 20 lb bag. The larger bag is usually cheaper per pound, and the spare pound from the small bags is handy for the worn spots by the gate and the downspout, which often need a second pass.
Most overseeding fails at the soil, not the seed. On 5,000 sq ft, renting a core aerator or a slit seeder for a morning is the difference between seed that lies on thatch and seed that lands in grooves of soil. Mow lower than usual first, bag the clippings, then seed straight after aerating.
Choose the grass to match what is already there. Tall fescue into tall fescue blends in; bluegrass or ryegrass into a fescue lawn shows up as a different color and texture. See how much Kentucky bluegrass seed for 5,000 sq ft if you are thickening a bluegrass lawn instead. Overseeding a brown bermuda lawn with ryegrass for winter color is a different job with much higher rates, around 50 lb for this area.
Early fall is the usual window for cool-season lawns, and it is also when a starter or regular fertilizer goes down; how much 24-0-6 fertilizer for 5,000 sq ft covers the same area. Hold off on crabgrass preventers, which stop grass seed germinating too.

Frequently asked questions
How much perennial ryegrass seed to overseed 5,000 sq ft?
About 20 pounds at 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Ryegrass germinates fast, which is why it is common in overseeding mixes.
How much sun and shade mix to overseed 5,000 sq ft?
About 15 pounds at 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft, or 3 bags of 7 lb.
How much fine fescue to overseed a 5,000 sq ft shady lawn?
About 12.5 pounds at 2.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Fine fescues are the usual choice for dry shade under trees.
How much ryegrass to overseed 5,000 sq ft of bermuda for winter?
About 50 pounds of perennial ryegrass at 10 lb per 1,000 sq ft, or 8 bags of 7 lb (a 50 lb bag is the usual buy). Winter overseeding uses far more seed than thickening a fescue lawn.
