How much pea gravel for a 10×10 patio?
A 10 × 10 ft pea gravel patio 3 inches deep needs about 1.4 tons of pea gravel, roughly 1 cubic yard (27 cubic feet) allowing for settling and 5% waste. In 0.5 cu ft bags that is 55 bags.
How to work it out
- 10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft
- 100 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 25 cu ft ÷ 27 = 0.93 cu yd
- 0.93 cu yd compacted × 1.03 = 0.95 cu yd loose × 1.4 tons/cu yd = 1.34 tons
- + 5% waste = 1.4 tons
- Effective rate: ≈ 1.51 tons per cu yd compacted
- Bulk: 1.4 tons rounded up to the next ½ ton = 1.5 tons
- 27 cu ft loose ÷ 0.5 cu ft per bag = 55 bags
A 10 × 10 pea gravel patio fits a small table and four chairs or a fire pit with a ring of seats. Chair legs sink into deep, loose pea gravel, so 3 in over a compacted base, with sturdy edging, is a better combination than piling it deeper.

What to know about a 10×10 pea gravel patio
Fifty-odd bags is the awkward middle: a pallet and a bit from a home center, or a single small bulk load. Bulk pea gravel is usually sold by the ton or half ton, so you would order one and a half tons and have a little left over for top-ups — pea gravel gets kicked out of a patio every summer, so a spare pile is not wasted.
Dig out about 5 in: 2 in for a compacted crushed-stone base and 3 in for the pea gravel. The base is what stops chairs sinking; pea gravel on bare soil turns into a soft, shifting surface within a season. Lay landscape fabric between the soil and the base if the ground is soft.
Edge all four sides with steel, stone or pavers on edge, set about an inch above the finished gravel. On a square this small, a honeycomb stabilizer grid under the top layer makes the surface firm enough for a table.
