How much compost to topdress 1,000 sq ft of lawn?
Topdressing 1,000 sq ft of lawn with 1/4 inch of compost takes about 0.77 cubic yards (20.8 cubic feet), or 21 bags of 1 cu ft.
How to work it out
- Area: 1,000 sq ft
- 1,000 sq ft × 0.25 in ÷ 12 = 20.8 cu ft ÷ 27 = 0.77 cu yd
- 20.8 cu ft ÷ 1 cu ft per bag = 21 bags
- Bulk: 0.77 cu yd rounded up to the next ½ cu yd = 1 cu yd
A quarter inch sounds like nothing, but it is the standard topdressing depth. Penn State Extension recommends a thin layer of about 1/4 in on established turf, worked into the soil rather than left sitting on top, and rounds the amount up to about a cubic yard per 1,000 sq ft; the extra goes into aeration holes and low spots.

What to know about topdressing 1,000 sq ft with compost
Timing and method matter more than the exact volume. Penn State’s suggested approach is to spread the compost first, then make several passes with a hollow-tine core aerator and drag a mat or the back of a rake across the lawn, so the plugs break up and compost falls into the holes. Do it in the cool, moist part of the season when the grass is actively growing: early fall for most northern lawns.
Buy screened, fully finished compost. Anything with chunks larger than about half an inch sits on top of the grass. If you make your own, sieve it first.
The common mistake is going too thick. More than about half an inch at once can smother the grass, and a layer of organic matter left on the surface dries out fast. Two thin passes, a season apart, beat one heavy one.
Bags or bulk? Twenty-one 1 cu ft bags is a manageable car-load. In bulk you would order a full yard (half a yard is not quite enough), which leaves about six cubic feet over for the beds. For spreading, a roller-cage peat spreader gives the most even layer; a shovel flick and a rake works but is slower.
Starting a lawn from scratch instead? Topsoil comes first: see How much topsoil for a new 1,000 sq ft lawn, and the overseeding 5,000 sq ft page if you are seeding into the topdressing. For vegetable beds, where compost goes on much thicker, see How much compost for a 100 sq ft vegetable garden.

What you’ll need
- Compost / peat moss spreaderMid-range price
A rolling mesh cage that sifts compost or peat onto a lawn in a thin, even layer.

Steel tines for spreading gravel and soil and leveling it flat. The flat back of a bow rake doubles as a leveling tool.

Most home wheelbarrows hold 4–6 cubic feet — so a cubic yard of mulch is five or six trips. Two wheels are steadier on soft ground.
