How much sod for 1,000 sq ft?
Sodding 1,000 square feet takes about 1,050 square feet of sod with 5% extra for cuts: 105 pieces of 10 square feet (2 × 5 ft rolls). On 450 sq ft pallets that is 2 full pallets plus about 150 square feet more.
How to work it out
- Area: 1,000 sq ft + 5% for cuts = 1,050 sq ft
- 1,050 sq ft ÷ 10 sq ft per piece = 105 pieces
- 1,050 sq ft ÷ 450 sq ft per pallet = 2.33 → 3 pallets
- 1,050 sq ft × 5 lb per sq ft ≈ 5,250 lb (one pallet ≈ 2,250 lb)
A thousand square feet is a typical small backyard and a manageable one-day DIY job for two people, if the soil is prepared ahead of time. At about 5 lb per square foot, 1,050 sq ft of sod weighs around 5,250 lb, well over two tons, so have the pallets dropped as close to the lawn as possible.

- That is 2 full pallets plus about 150 sq ft — many suppliers sell partial pallets or single rolls.
- A full pallet weighs about 2,250 lb, more than many half-ton pickups are rated to carry (check the payload sticker in the door jamb), and wet sod can weigh up to half as much again. Have it delivered, or haul part loads.
- Sod is perishable. Schedule delivery for the day you lay it, and water within an hour or so of laying each section.

What to know about sodding 1,000 sq ft
The awkward part at this size is the pallet math. At 450 sq ft a pallet, 1,050 sq ft is two full pallets and a third that is only about a third used, and each full pallet weighs about 2,250 lb, more than many half-ton pickups are rated to carry. Many farms and garden centers will sell the remainder as loose rolls or by the square yard (1,050 sq ft is about 117 square yards), which saves paying for a whole pallet you will not lay.
Two people can usually lay 1,000 sq ft in a day if the ground is already graded, raked firm and lightly moist. The prep, not the laying, is what takes the time: stripping old turf, loosening the soil and getting a smooth grade that slopes away from the house. Do that the weekend before, and book delivery for the morning you lay.
The common mistake is letting the last pallet sit. Sod on a pallet heats up and yellows within a day or two in warm weather, so lay the pieces in shade first if you must pause, and start watering the finished section while you are still laying the rest.
Seeding the same lawn instead costs far less in materials: see how much grass seed for 1,000 sq ft of tall fescue. For a whole yard, how much sod for 5,000 sq ft covers staging several pallets.
