How much sod for 5,000 sq ft?
A 5,000 square foot lawn needs about 5,250 square feet of sod with 5% waste: 525 pieces of 10 square feet, or about 12 pallets at 450 sq ft each (11.7 before rounding up).
How to work it out
- Area: 5,000 sq ft + 5% for cuts = 5,250 sq ft
- 5,250 sq ft ÷ 10 sq ft per piece = 525 pieces
- 5,250 sq ft ÷ 450 sq ft per pallet = 11.7 → 12 pallets
- 5,250 sq ft × 5 lb per sq ft ≈ 26,250 lb (one pallet ≈ 2,250 lb)
At this size sod goes from a weekend project to a crew job. Sod dries out quickly on the pallet in warm weather, so either stage deliveries or line up enough help to lay it all the day it arrives, and have the irrigation plan ready before the first pallet lands.

- That is 11 full pallets plus about 301 sq ft — many suppliers sell partial pallets or single rolls.
- A full pallet weighs about 2,250 lb, more than many half-ton pickups are rated to carry (check the payload sticker in the door jamb), and wet sod can weigh up to half as much again. Have it delivered, or haul part loads.
- Sod is perishable. Schedule delivery for the day you lay it, and water within an hour or so of laying each section.

What to know about sodding 5,000 sq ft
Twelve pallets is a truckload, and pallet size changes the count by several pallets either way: at 400 sq ft you would need 14, at 600 sq ft only 9. Get the farm’s real pallet coverage before you compare quotes, because a lower price per pallet can hide a smaller pallet. The load itself is around 26,250 lb at 5 lb per square foot, which is why sod at this size arrives on a flatbed with a forklift, not in a pickup.
Plan the laying in zones. A small crew can lay a few pallets an hour once it gets going, but the water has to keep up: Mississippi State Extension’s advice is that someone should be watering new sod while others are still laying it. Split the lawn so each irrigation zone, or each hose run, is finished and soaked before the next delivery.
Five thousand square feet also needs a lot of water afterwards. Frequent watering for the first week or two, then tapering off, can run to thousands of gallons a week; run the numbers in the garden watering calculator before choosing a summer install date.
Seed is the cheaper alternative at this size if you can wait for it to fill in: compare how much Kentucky bluegrass seed for 5,000 sq ft, or, to thicken an existing lawn, how much seed to overseed 5,000 sq ft. A smaller patch is worked through in how much sod for 1,000 sq ft.
