How much topsoil for a 10×10 garden bed?

Short answer

A 10 × 10 ft garden bed built up 6 inches holds 1.85 cubic yards (50 cubic feet) of settled soil. With 20% for settling, buy 2.22 cubic yards of topsoil (60 cubic feet), about 2.67 tons at average moisture. In 0.75 cu ft bags that is 80 bags.

How to work it out

  1. 10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft
  2. 100 sq ft × 6 in ÷ 12 = 50 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.85 cu yd
  3. 1.85 cu yd + 20% for settling = 2.22 cu yd
  4. 2.22 cu yd × 1.2 tons/cu yd ≈ 2.67 tons
  5. Bulk: 2.22 cu yd rounded up to the next ½ cu yd = 2.5 cu yd

Six inches of new soil on top of poor ground gives vegetables a real root zone, especially if you loosen the ground underneath first. A hundred square feet is a typical first vegetable plot: room for a few tomatoes, peppers, beans and a row of salad greens with paths between them.

  • That many bags is a lot of carrying. Bulk topsoil is usually far cheaper at this volume — ask about delivery and whether it is screened.
  • Hauling it yourself? At roughly 1,500 lb per load — a typical half-ton pickup payload; check the sticker in your door jamb — that is about 4 trips. Soil fills the payload long before it fills the bed.
  • Spread it about 20% deeper than the finished depth: 6 in firmed is about 7.2 in loose. Water or roll it, then fill any dips before seeding.

Wheelbarrow (6 cu ft class)2.22 cu yd of soil weighs about 2.67 tons. A two-wheel barrow is steadier with heavy loads, and you’ll want it half-full at most.

What to know about a 10×10 garden bed 6 inches deep

The number assumes straight sides. If the new soil simply sits on the lawn with sloped edges, you lose depth around the outside; either frame it with timbers or edging, or make the mound a little wider than 10 ft. Strip or smother the grass first: soil piled on live turf lets the grass grow straight back through.

At over two yards, bags stop making sense. Eighty bags of 0.75 cu ft is two and a half tons of lifting, loading and unloading, and the calculator puts a pickup at about four trips if you haul bulk soil yourself. Most landscape yards will sell two and a half yards, and many deliver.

Fork or till the existing ground before spreading, then mix the bottom couple of inches of the new soil into it. A sharp line between loose topsoil and hard clay stops roots and holds water on top of it.

Garden soil does better with organic matter blended in. Two inches of compost over the same 100 sq ft is its own calculation: How much compost for a 100 sq ft vegetable garden. If you only need 4 inches of fill rather than 6, How many cubic yards of dirt for a 10×10 area, 4 inches deep has that figure. Seeding a whole lawn instead? Frequently asked questions

How much topsoil for a 10×10 bed only 4 inches deep?

About 1.48 cubic yards (54 bags of 0.75 cu ft), roughly 1.78 tons. Four inches is enough over ground you have dug and loosened.

How much topsoil to fill a 10×10 area a foot deep?

About 4.44 cubic yards, roughly 5.33 tons at average moisture. That is a small dump-truck delivery, not a pickup load.

How many 1.5 cu ft bags of topsoil for a 10×10 bed 6 inches deep?

40 bags of 1.5 cu ft for 2.22 cubic yards. Bigger bags halve the count but not the weight you lift.
