How much mulch for 10 m²?
You need about 0.75 cubic metres (750 litres) of bark or wood-chip mulch for 10 m² spread 7.5 cm deep: 15 bags of 50 L.
How to work it out
- Area: 10 m²
- 10 m² × 0.075 m = 0.75 m³
- 750 L ÷ 50 L per bag = 15 bags
In metric the maths is tidy: every square metre at 1 cm deep takes 10 litres. So 10 m² at 7.5 cm is 750 litres, three-quarters of a cubic metre. Bark mulch is sold in 50–80 L bags and in bulk bags, so the useful comparison is fifteen small bags against one big one.

- Under about 1 m³, bags are almost always easier — many suppliers have a minimum load.

What to know about mulching 10 m²
- Bag sizes. 750 L is 15 bags of 50 L exactly, 13 bags of 60 L (780 L), 11 of 70 L or 10 of 80 L. Bag volumes on bark are usually the loose volume at filling; compressed bark fluffs up a little when you open it.
- Bulk bags. Bulk bags of bark or wood chip are often sold at around 1 m³ (check the supplier’s stated volume — some are smaller). One covers this border with about a quarter to spare, which is useful for topping up next year.
- Depth choice. 7.5 cm (3 in) suits a border being mulched properly for the first time. For topping up an existing layer, 5 cm is plenty, and it saves a third.
- Measure the border, not the plot. A 10 m² border is, for example, 1 m deep along a 10 m fence, or 2 × 5 m.
In US units this is almost exactly a 10×10 ft area (10 m² is about 108 sq ft) at 3 in. The UK often calls it bark chippings or ornamental bark; the maths is the same for any loose mulch.
