How much mulch for a 10×10 area (100 sq ft)?
You need about 0.93 cubic yards of mulch (25 cubic feet) for a 10 × 10 ft area spread 3 inches deep: 13 bags of 2 cu ft, or 9 bags of 3 cu ft. At 2 inches deep the same area takes 0.62 cubic yards, about 9 bags.
How to work it out
- 10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft
- 100 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 25 cu ft ÷ 27 = 0.93 cu yd
- 25 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft per bag = 13 bags
A 10 × 10 ft patch is a common size for an island bed, a corner planting, or the strip of ground around a small shed or play set. It is small enough that most people buy bags and bring them home in the car, so the real question is whether you need the full 3 inches or only a top-up over what is already there.

What to know about a 10×10 mulch bed
- Bag fit. 25 cubic feet is 12.5 bags of the common 2 cu ft size, so 13 bags leaves half a bag over — handy for filling thin spots after the first rain settles things. With 3 cu ft bags, 9 bags hold 27 cubic feet, two more than you need; with 1.5 cu ft bags it takes 17.
- Just under a yard. Bulk-wise, the bed needs a little less than one cubic yard, which is the smallest load many landscape yards will sell. A delivery fee on a single yard usually swamps any saving per yard, so bulk only makes sense here if you can collect it yourself in a pickup or trailer.
- Measure inside the edging. If the bed is framed with 4 in landscape timbers or a paver border and you measured 10 ft to the outside, the mulched area is only about 9 ft 4 in square — roughly 87 sq ft, which trims the order to 11 bags.
- Check the old layer first. Push a trowel through in three or four spots. If an inch or more is left, 2 inches of new mulch brings it back to a healthy total; Penn State Extension warns that stacking a full layer on top of old mulch every year adds up to too deep a blanket.
