How much mulch for a 10×20 area?
You need about 1.85 cubic yards of mulch (50 cubic feet) to cover a 10 × 20 ft area 3 inches deep. In bags that is 25 bags of 2 cu ft or 17 bags of 3 cu ft; a bulk order rounds up to 2 cubic yards.
How to work it out
- 20 ft × 10 ft = 200 sq ft
- 200 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 50 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.85 cu yd
- 50 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft per bag = 25 bags
- Bulk: 1.85 cu yd rounded up to the next ½ cu yd = 2 cu yd
Two hundred square feet is a typical front-foundation planting, a pair of 10 ft beds either side of a walk, or a generous island bed in the lawn. At just under two yards it is the first size where a bulk load is worth pricing, and also about the most bags most people want to lift in one weekend.

What to know about a 10×20 mulch job
Twenty-five 2 cu ft bags divide the 50 cubic feet exactly, so there is nothing left over — buy one extra if the bed has dips or the edges are ragged. That many bags is several car trips; a pickup takes them in one, as does a small bulk load of 2 cubic yards (the half-yard rounding adds about 4 cubic feet of spare).
- Don’t subtract the shrubs. The space under existing shrubs and perennials gets mulched too, just pulled back from the stems, so measure the whole bed outline.
- Two beds or one? If the 200 sq ft is really two 10 × 10 ft beds either side of a path, the total is the same as one How much mulch for a 10×10 area bed doubled; the path itself may want coarser chips at 3–4 in.
- Bulk logistics. Two yards of shredded mulch make a pile a few feet high. Put a tarp down on the driveway, and plan to spread it within a week or two so it doesn’t mat or blow.
- Depth changes the order a lot. At 2 in it is 17 bags, at 4 in it is 34 — the jump to 4 in is the How much mulch for a new 200 sq ft bed at 4 inches page.

- Wheelbarrow (6 cu ft class)Mid-range price
Most home wheelbarrows hold 4–6 cubic feet — so a cubic yard of mulch is five or six trips. Two wheels are steadier on soft ground.

Put it down where the truck dumps: it protects the driveway and makes the last shovelfuls easy to scoop up.
