How much mulch for a new 200 sq ft bed at 4 inches?
A new 200 sq ft bed mulched 4 inches deep needs about 2.47 cubic yards (66.7 cubic feet): 34 bags of 2 cu ft, or a bulk order of 2.5 cubic yards.
How to work it out
- Area: 200 sq ft
- 200 sq ft × 4 in ÷ 12 = 66.7 cu ft ÷ 27 = 2.47 cu yd
- 66.7 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft per bag = 34 bags
- Bulk: 2.47 cu yd rounded up to the next ½ cu yd = 2.5 cu yd
Four inches is the top of the range Penn State and the University of Minnesota Extension recommend, and it is meant for a first season: a freshly dug bed with weed seed in the soil, or ground you are converting from lawn. Once the bed fills in, 2–3 inches maintains it.

What to know about mulching a new 200 sq ft bed
The extra inch over the usual 3 in costs a third more mulch — 34 bags instead of 25 — so use it where it earns its keep. It is worth it on bare soil you have just turned over, because disturbed soil brings buried weed seed to the surface and a thick layer keeps light off it. It is not worth it on heavy clay that stays wet; Penn State suggests a thinner layer where drainage is poor.
- Order size. 2.47 cubic yards rounds to a 2.5 yard bulk order, which is about as small as a delivery gets before the fee dominates. As bags, 34 is a full pickup or three or four car loads.
- New plants need a gap. Rake the mulch back a few inches from each new shrub and perennial crown, even though the rest of the bed is deep.
- Next year is cheaper. Top up only enough to get back to about 3 in — often an inch — rather than repeating 4 in.
- Converting lawn? Some gardeners lay cardboard under the mulch to smother turf. If you do, soak it and overlap the edges; the mulch depth on top stays the same.

What you’ll need
- Wheelbarrow (6 cu ft class)Mid-range price
Most home wheelbarrows hold 4–6 cubic feet — so a cubic yard of mulch is five or six trips. Two wheels are steadier on soft ground.

Many tines grip shredded mulch and compost that slide off a shovel. Much faster for spreading bulk mulch.
