How much mulch for 500 sq ft?

Short answer

You need about 4.63 cubic yards of mulch (125 cubic feet) for 500 sq ft of beds at 3 inches deep. Bagged, that is 63 bags of 2 cu ft or 42 bags of 3 cu ft, or a bulk order of 5 cubic yards.

How to work it out

  1. Area: 500 sq ft
  2. 500 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 125 cu ft ÷ 27 = 4.63 cu yd
  3. 125 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft per bag = 63 bags
  4. Bulk: 4.63 cu yd rounded up to the next ½ cu yd = 5 cu yd

Five hundred square feet is roughly the total bed area around an average suburban house: foundation beds, a couple of tree rings and an island bed or two. At this size the question is less "how much" than "how do I move it", because sixty-odd bags or a five-yard pile is a real day’s work.

What to know about mulching 500 sq ft

  • Add the beds up. Few people have one 500 sq ft bed. Measure each one — a How much mulch for a 3×40 ft foundation bed strip, a couple of 6 ft tree rings, an island bed — and add each to the project list so the total is real, not a guess.
  • Wheelbarrow trips. A typical 6 cu ft wheelbarrow carries about 5 cubic feet of mulch without spilling, so 125 cubic feet is around 25 loads. A mulch fork fills it faster than a shovel.
  • Bulk is the norm here. A five-yard order leaves about 10 cubic feet spare (the half-yard rounding), enough to top up thin spots. Ask whether the yard has a minimum delivery and how close to the beds the truck can tip.
  • Bags still make sense for part of it. Beds in the back garden with no truck access are often easier to do with bags carried through the gate.
