How much mulch for a 6 ft tree ring?
A 6 ft diameter tree ring 3 inches deep needs about 0.26 cubic yards of mulch (7.1 cubic feet), which is 4 bags of 2 cu ft.
How to work it out
- 3.1416 × (6 ft ÷ 2)² = 28.3 sq ft
- 28.3 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 7.07 cu ft ÷ 27 = 0.26 cu yd
- 7.07 cu ft ÷ 2 cu ft per bag = 4 bags
A wide, shallow ring does a young tree far more good than a tall pile against the trunk. The ring stops the mower and string trimmer from nicking the bark, and it takes the grass away from the roots’ nearest competition for water.

What to know about a 6 ft mulch ring
A 6 ft circle is about 28 sq ft, so at 3 inches it takes a little over 7 cubic feet — four 2 cu ft bags with most of a bag left for the next tree. Measure straight across through the trunk; the calculator does the circle math (3.1416 × radius²).
- Make a donut, not a volcano. Penn State Extension recommends keeping mulch 3–5 in away from the trunk of a young tree and 8–10 in from a mature one, so the root flare — where the trunk widens into the roots — stays dry and visible.
- Wider is better if the mower allows. Mulch out toward the drip line where you can. An 8 ft ring at the same depth is about 7 bags, and a 10 ft ring about 10.
- Remove the grass first. Mulch over thick turf doesn’t kill it reliably; slice it out or smother it with cardboard.
- Several trees? Choose the circle, enter one ring and set how many. Five 6 ft rings come to 18 bags.
Compared with a bed, the numbers are small, so bags are the obvious buy. For a ring that is part of a bigger foundation planting, add it to the 3×40 ft foundation bed total, or see How much mulch for a 10×10 area for a square bed of similar effort.

What you’ll need
- No-dig landscape edgingBudget price
Plastic edging pinned with spikes — keeps mulch in beds and grass out. Fine for mulch; too flimsy for gravel paths.

Easier than a wheelbarrow for hauling bags and pots, and it tips to unload. Check the rated load against what you will carry.
