How much topsoil for 50 m² at 10 cm deep?
Covering 50 m² 10 cm deep takes 5 cubic metres of firmed topsoil. With 20% for settling, order 6 cubic metres, weighing roughly 8.54 tonnes at average moisture.
How to work it out
- Area: 50 m²
- 50 m² × 0.1 m = 5 m³
- 5 m³ + 20% for settling = 6 m³
- 6 m³ × 1.42 t/m³ ≈ 8.54 tonnes
- Bulk: 6 m³ rounded up to the next 0.5 m³ = 6 m³
Five cubic metres is a common order for a new lawn area or a large border rebuild. The metric maths is easy to check: every square metre at 1 cm deep is 10 litres, so 50 m² at 10 cm is 5,000 litres once firmed, and about 6,000 litres as it comes off the lorry. Topsoil is often sold in bulk bags or by the tonne loose, so check which the supplier means before comparing prices.

- That many bags is a lot of carrying. Bulk topsoil is usually far cheaper at this volume — ask about delivery and whether it is screened.
- Hauling it yourself? At roughly 700 kg per load — check your vehicle or trailer rating — that is about 13 trips. Soil reaches the weight limit long before it fills the load space.
- Spread it about 20% deeper than the finished depth: 10 cm firmed is about 12 cm loose. Water or roll it, then fill any dips before seeding.

What to know about topsoil for 50 m² at 10 cm
Bulk bags (often called builder’s or dumpy bags) are commonly sold as roughly 0.7–1 m³, so 6 m³ is somewhere around six to nine bags. Ask the supplier for the actual volume; a bag sold as “1 tonne” holds less than a cubic metre of damp soil. Each full bag is too heavy to move by hand, so it has to be craned off exactly where you will use it.
A loose tipper load is usually cheaper per cubic metre than the same amount in bags, but it lands as one heap. You need a spot the lorry can reach, and ideally a tarp underneath. From there it is barrow work: a builder’s barrow often holds around 85–100 litres, so expect somewhere around 60–70 trips.
Ten centimetres is roughly 4 inches, the bottom of the 4–6 inch (10–15 cm) range Penn State Extension gives for establishing turf. That figure is the firmed depth, which is why this page adds 20% and you spread about 12 cm loose; if the ground underneath is poor, aim deeper still. For the US version of this job, see How much topsoil for a new 1,000 sq ft lawn; for a smaller vegetable plot, How much topsoil for a 10×10 garden bed. Filling a sleeper bed instead of levelling ground needs a blended mix rather than plain topsoil: see How much soil for a 1.2 × 2.4 m raised bed.

Most home wheelbarrows hold 4–6 cubic feet — so a cubic yard of mulch is five or six trips. Two wheels are steadier on soft ground.

Frequently asked questions
How much topsoil for 50 m² at 15 cm?
9 cubic metres, roughly 12.8 tonnes at average moisture. That is half as much again as 10 cm.
How many 40 litre bags of topsoil cover 50 m² at 10 cm?
150 bags of 40 L for 6 cubic metres. At that count, bulk bags or a loose load are far less work.
How much topsoil to topdress 50 m² of lawn 1 cm deep?
About 0.55 cubic metres with 10% extra (22 bags of 25 L). Spread it thinly enough that the grass still shows through.
